Tiny Crochet Cross

The idea for this pattern began with the smallest version of the cross.

I was sitting at my local college group, crocheting quietly while listening to the sermon. Crocheting actually helps me concentrate, so I often take a small project with me when I’m listening.

I had already been thinking about designing a crochet cross for some time, and with Easter approaching, it seemed like the perfect opportunity to finally make one.

Using fingering-weight yarn, I experimented with creating a very small cross. Once I had the tiny version figured out, I started wondering what it would look like in larger yarn weights.

That experiment led to two more sizes.

By switching to worsted-weight and bulky yarn and making a few adjustments to the stitch count, the same basic design can be turned into three different cross appliques.

A Fast and Beginner-Friendly Crochet Project

This crochet cross is a quick project that works up in no time.

If you’re looking for a small project that can be finished in just a few minutes, this is a great one to try. The smallest cross is especially quick, while the larger versions are still simple and fast to work up.

What Can You Do With a Crochet Cross?

Medium cross: #4 worsted weight yarn, H/5mm crochet hook

Each cross uses the same basic construction. The size changes depending on the yarn weight and a few additional stitches.

The cross is crocheted as one piece, beginning with the long vertical section before forming the side arms.

Instructions

Tiny Cross

With fingering weight yarn, fsc 9.

Row 1: Sl st into the last fsc ch, then sl st across the next 3 sts. Ch 4, sc in the 2nd ch and next 2 ch. Sl st into the cross center. Repeat the ch-4 section on the opposite side, then sl st down the fsc ch side. Fasten off.

Medium Cross

With worsted weight yarn, fsc 11.

Row 1: Sl st into the last fsc ch, then sl st across the next 4 sts. Ch 5, sc in the 2nd ch and next 3 ch. Sl st into the center of the cross. Repeat the ch-5 section on the opposite side, then sl st down the fsc ch side. Fasten off.

Large Cross

With bulky weight yarn, fsc 15.

Row 1: Slip stitch into the last fsc chain, then slip stitch across the next 5 sts. Ch 6 and sc in the 2nd ch and next 4 ch. Sl st into the cross center. Repeat the ch-6 section on the other side, then slip stitch down the fsc chain side.

Fasten off.

Finishing

Steam block your crosses so they don’t curl.

After blocking, weave in all your ends!
